As the United States reaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we at the Center for Progressive Reform find ourselves reflecting on a history that is both extraordinary and in progress. We also recognize that this anniversary carries different meanings for different people.
Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward, puts it plainly, “While the Declaration of Independence was exceptional and accomplished what no other nation had done, its moral clarity rang hollow for many living in America at the time and even today.” That tension has shaped the American story.
For some, the Declaration represents the promise of liberty and self-determination. For others, it has always existed alongside exclusion, inequality, and delayed justice. Both realities are part of the same history.
This complexity is reflected in our own community. Our staff, board, and scholars come from a wide range of backgrounds, lived experiences, and traditions. That diversity is not secondary to our work; it is central to how we understand the world and how we approach the challenges of democracy, governance, and justice.
On this anniversary, rather than offering a simple celebration of independence, we choose to reflect on the fuller meaning of this promise and how we continue to fall short of it in the current moment. We honor the people across generations and cultures who have worked to expand the promise of this country for all.
The story of America is evolving. It is shaped continuously by those who insist that the American Dream be made real for more people. As we mark this milestone, we recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a society that lives more in accordance with its stated values.
