WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Board of Directors of the Center for Progressive Reform (the Center) announced today that the organization has selected Terrill North as its new executive director.
“We’re incredibly pleased Terrill is joining the Center as executive director,” said Sid Shapiro, chair of the Board of Directors. “He brings a strong passion for justice and equity, years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and development, and a keen vision for the Center’s growth and success.”
North joins the Center with more than 20 years of experience building sustainable organizations and scaling community-led initiatives, with professional interests in democracy, conservation, environmental justice, public health, and effective policy advocacy. Much of his work has been centered in Maryland and Washington, DC.
“I’m thrilled to be joining a team that has spent nearly 25 years proving government can be made to work for people and the planet,” said North. “The fight ahead is a serious one, but the Center is built for it, and I’m honored to help lead it.”
North previously served as a partner with New Profit, a venture philanthropy focused on democracy, education, and economic mobility. Before that, he was executive director of Hoffberger Family Philanthropies in Baltimore, where he introduced its environmental grants program and community participation in grantmaking, and the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth, and Families, which included leadership of the Montgomery County Conservation Corps.
Earlier in his career, North served as chief of staff to a member of Congress from New York and policy director to a member of Congress from Massachusetts. He began his career in Washington as an associate legislative representative with Earthjustice. He has also served on nonprofit and philanthropic boards, including the Ruth and Hal Launders Charitable Trust and The Knowledge House.
“Along with his extensive professional background, Terrill is all too familiar with environmental injustices,” Shapiro added. “His lived experiences will help inform our work as we continue to pursue proactive policy solutions that address injustices and ensure that all people are protected from environmental and other harms, no matter who they are or what ZIP code they happen to live in.”
A committee chaired by Shapiro led a nationwide search process. While the search was underway, staff leaders Catalina Gonzalez and James Goodwin served as interim co-executive directors. The board, staff, and Member Scholars thank them for their invaluable service.
