In recent months, Americans have learned about the many ways that Project 2025 would demolish our constitutional system of checks and balances and threaten individual rights and freedoms. So far, though, an important part of this story has not been adequately told: How Project 2025 would continue the decades-long conservative campaign to hobble the federal regulatory system and the critical role that system plays in our democracy.
In our second webinar on the topic, held October 9, the Center for Progressive Reform and the Coalition for Sensible Safeguards focused on the provisions in Project 2025 that are aimed at “weaponizing” the regulatory system to advance goals of promoting an authoritarian presidency and reconstructing our society in line with a nationalist vision. These aspects of Project 2025 are unique in that they seek to “strengthen” the powers of the regulatory system by undermining the independence of agencies, increasing political control of decision-making, and abusing agency enforcement authority.
